Christine Hubbard, Latoya Lee, Richard Sosulski and Dellvin Williams are among the 575 students who received a scholarship from the U.S. Department of State’s Critical Language Scholarship Program. They are spending seven to 10 weeks in intensive language institutes this summer in host countries. Hubbard is studying Russian in Russia, Lee is studying Hindi in India, Sosulski is studying Korean in South Korea and Williams is studying Arabic in Jordan. They are expected to continue their language study beyond these fully-funded programs, applying critical language skills in their future careers.

Catherine Hao, ºÚÁÏÊÓƵ Scholar and undergraduate majoring in biochemistry and integrated neuroscience, presented “The Effect of HIF2-alpha on Cell Growth and Cell Survival” at the Undergraduate Research Symposium, Columbia University, April 2-3, 2011.

Eliza Anderson, ºÚÁÏÊÓƵ Scholar and undergraduate in Harpur College, presented, “Prisons: An Incubator for Disease” at the North American Correctional and Criminal Justice Psychology Conference in Toronto, June 2-4, 201,1as part of a symposium on the health and wellness of long-term prisoners.

Binghamton’s Career Development Center had a strong presence at the 35th annual SUNY Career Development Organization’s conference held June 8-10, earning two awards for excellence, conducting program sessions and serving on committees for the conference:
    1.  Awards for excellence were given for the CDC’s Student Staff Development Program which provided student staff with an active mentoring program, monthly working sessions to work on their personal career awareness and a competitive professional development model; and for the initiative,“It’s a New Year; Let’s Resolve to Promote Professionalism” in which they rallied the Division of Student Affairs around one of the hottest issues facing students’ career development.
    2.  Nancy Paul, director, and Erin Jennings, senior counselor/Peer Assistant Program coordinator, conducted a conference program session titled, “Promoting Professionalism: It Takes a Village” that highlighted the award-winning initiative noted above.
    3.  Holly Horn, assistant director for career development, served on the Conference Planning Committee and Board of Directors.
    4.  Wren Fritsky, career counselor, served on the Awards Committee.
    5.  Brandy Smith, career counselor, served on the Board of Directors.

Patricia Di Lorenzo, professor of psychology, has been selected by the National Institutes of Health as a member of its study section for somatosensory and chemsensory systems.

ºÚÁÏÊÓƵ’s Center for Civic Engagement (CCE) has been named a recipient of the 2011 State University of New York (SUNY) Outstanding Student Affairs Program Award for the Innovative Use of Social Networking.

SUNY’s Chief Student Affairs Officers and the Office of University Life and Enrollment Management recognized CCE for the positive impact its use of marketing and social media initiatives have made on students, their development and the learning community on the ºÚÁÏÊÓƵ campus.

The focus of CCE’s marketing and social media initiatives has been to inform students through methods they prefer, present new and unique opportunities to interact with its offerings, increase interest and make it easier to participate in meaningful service, and expand the office’s digital visibility across various platforms. The office’s innovative use of mobile tagging (quick-response codes) across print and promotional collateral and its recently launched Service On the Spot (S.O.S.) initiative were also cited. 

Award recipients will present their programs at the fall meeting of the Council of Chief Student Affairs Officers held in Corning on October 24.
